Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.
Psalm 90:12
I love that this verse reminds us, as parents, of our true end goal—not only in parenting, but in life itself. It lifts our eyes beyond today’s to-do lists and daily pressures and points us toward where all of this is ultimately headed. Parenting isn’t mainly about managing schedules, meeting milestones, or simply getting through the next season—it’s about preparing hearts for eternity.
God calls us to present a heart of wisdom to Him. And what ultimately matters to God isn’t how much we accomplish, but who we become. A heart of wisdom is a heart that knows God, fears Him, trusts Him, and orders life according to His truth. In parenting, that means our aim isn’t simply well-rounded or successful children, but children whose hearts are being shaped toward God.
Learning to “number our days” doesn’t mean counting time anxiously—it means recognizing how brief and purposeful our days truly are. When we number our days, we stop living as though time is endless. We slow down. We become intentional. And we begin to ask better questions:
- How am I stewarding the time God has given me with my child?
- What am I shaping in my child’s heart right now?
- What will matter when this season is over—and when life itself is over?
Numbering our days teaches us to live—and parent—with intention instead of urgency, and with purpose instead of pressure. It reminds us that every day is a gift, every moment is forming something, and every choice is shaping a heart.
So let’s parent with the end goal in mind—raising children whose hearts are rooted in God, anchored in His truth, and shaped for eternity.
