I’m sharing one of our family’s favorite children’s Bibles: More Than a Story by Sally Michael. It comes in two volumes—one for the Old Testament and one for the New Testament.
What I love most about this resource is how it helps children see the Bible as one unified story. For a long time, even as an adult, I tended to think of the Bible mainly as a collection of stories that teach us how to live. But this book aims to shows that it’s so much more. Sally emphasizes that the Bible is the authoritative Word of God, revealing His character, His work in the world, and His plan of redemption for sinful people through His Son, Jesus Christ.
I also really appreciate how it stays child-appropriate without compromising the truth of Scripture. Many children’s Bibles take a lot of creative license to make stories fun and engaging, but sometimes that comes at the cost of minimizing key biblical truths. This one does a beautiful job of staying faithful to the text while still being engaging for kids. It even includes direct Scripture quotes, helping children become familiar with important passages.
Another highlight is how key doctrines and truths are intentionally emphasized in bold, helping to build a strong theological foundation for children. The stories are arranged in chronological order and include accounts that are often left out of other children’s Bibles—like the major and minor prophets during the later years of Israel’s history.
Each chapter is short enough to read in about ten minutes, with illustrations on every page to keep kids engaged. My favorite part, though, is the “Making You Wise for Salvation” section at the end of each chapter. It ties the story into the bigger picture of Scripture, provides helpful conversation starters, and shows how to apply the truths learned.
This Bible is recommended for ages 6 and up, but honestly, it’s a wonderful resource for the whole family. The discussions it encourages can benefit all ages.
I highly recommend this for families who want to teach their children that the Bible is more than just a collection of stories—but a powerful, unified revelation of who God is, and how He calls us to know Him, trust Him, and follow Him. I hope you’ll check it out!
